The Venue
Brief History
University Avenue is proud to be among the oldest Churches of Christ in Texas. For over 150 years, the UA church family has been sharing God's love with the city of Austin.
The University Avenue church was founded in 1847 when ten followers of the Stone/Campbell movement met in Austin. In 1888 sixteen members launched a new congregation, which met on E. 7th St. until 1894 when a building was erected at the corner of 14th and San Bernard Streets. The congregation met there for the next 23 years and was known as East Austin Church of Christ.
In March 1917 they purchased a lot with a 3-story boarding house on the corner of University Avenue and 19th Street. This was converted into a place of worship, which seated about 250-300 and served until 1949 when the present sanctuary was completed.
